27 June 2015Ed Clancy impresses pupils at Emley First School
Schoolchildren were in awe when they came face-to-face with one of their sporting heroes.
Ed, who lives in Holmfirth, gave a talk to the whole school and shared with the youngsters his experiences and cycling tips.
Teacher and sports coordinator Edward Firth said: “He talked about how he started cycling, how he trains, what the Olympics were like and his experiences as a professional cyclist.
“We’ve got some children doing cycle races at the moment and they were in awe of him.”
It was the cycling star’s first visit to the school, which organised the visit to coincide with its upcoming sports study week.
The week will include the school’s sports day and various activities focusing on healthy eating and keeping fit.
The pupils took part in a question and answer session with Ed and quizzed him on a variety of topics, said Mr Firth.
He added: “He’s a good role model and the children were really engaged and interested in what he was saying.
“He talked about his plans for Rio, his training regime at the moment and his diet.
“Ed said he drinks lots of protein shakes when doing the races and talked about how much sleep he needs.
“In the question and answer the children asked things like what was his favourite race, how many Olympics had he been to - and how much his bike was!”
