OLYMPIC and world champion Ed Clancy heads a high-calibre field as Newcastle's city centre plays host to one of the biggest " and most exciting " events in the UK cycling calendar tonight. Having grown rapidly from relatively modest beginnings in 2006, the Leazes Criterium will this year bring together 40 of the best riders in Europe to take on the twisting one-kilometre course in the city centre. With London 2012 gold medallist Clancy at the head of a field brimming with national champions and some of track cycling's elite teams, organiser Peter Harrison feels that it is the best field yet.

Team UK Youth edged closer to overall Pearl Izumi Tour Series success with victory in Round Nine at Woking, as Ed Clancy took the individual win to make him the most successful individual rider in Series history.

OLYMPIC hero Ed Clancy has praised the key role Gwent has played in turning Team GB into a global cycling power over the past five years. The 28-year-old who won Olympic gold in the Team Pursuit at both the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games, will be back in Gwent next month to compete in the Wales Open Criterium, part of the 2013 Abergavenny Festival of Cycling.

Chris Opie took his first ever Pearl Izumi Tour Series victory, winning the bunch sprint at Canary Wharf, heading home Olympic Champion Ed Clancy and New Zealander Roman Van Uden.
